At approximately 5 p.m. local time on October 14, contractors at Smurfit Westrock’s Covington paper mill in Virginia reported nausea and other mild symptoms and were transported for medical evaluation, according to the company statement quoted by local outlets. WDBJ7 cited a hospital spokesperson in reporting that at least 16 people were treated and released. WSLS 10 reported, also citing the hospital, that all 16 were in good condition and discharged by 9:20 p.m. on October 14. WDBJ7’s earlier estimate of nine patients was revised upward in its later report.
The company said the potential source of the symptoms was undetermined and under investigation. No reviewed source establishes a chemical, exposure pathway, process, or cause. The company also said there was no known threat to public safety. That is the company’s current statement, not an independently completed investigation or an all-clear for every work area.
Why operating impact remains unsettled
WSLS 10 reported the company’s statement that operations were not impacted. WDBJ7, however, reported that its unnamed sources said a portion of the plant was shut down. A restricted work area and overall production or shipping are different scopes, but the available reports do not reconcile them. They do not identify a grade, machine, inventory position, customer order or revised delivery date.

A buyer’s supply-continuity checklist
These are editorial questions for a company that may source from this site or supplier, not a claim that the incident disrupted deliveries.
- Product and lot linkage: Which purchase orders, paper or board specifications and lots are confirmed by supplier records to originate at Covington? A shared company name does not establish mill-of-origin.
- Order-specific shipping: Has the relevant order completed production, dispatch and carrier handoff? Has the supplier issued a written revised delivery date? A general operations statement is not an order-level delivery guarantee.
- Approved alternatives: For an alternate supplier, compare grade, basis weight, dimensions, certifications, customer approvals and trial history. The reports do not verify another mill’s available capacity or inventory.
- Contractor-safety boundary: If maintenance or contractor work overlaps a facility’s operations, review area control, potential-exposure investigation, symptom reporting, medical evaluation and restart authorization with the responsible safety lead. Do not infer this incident’s substance, process or restart conditions.
- Next evidence checkpoint: When supplier notices or an authority’s findings become available, update the assessment by product, lot and purchase-order number. Neither “no impact” nor “supply stopped” should be presented as an established order-level fact in advance.

A supplier question to send: “Please confirm whether any of our purchase orders or lots were manufactured or dispatched at the Covington mill; whether production, shipment or arrival dates have changed for those orders; and, if so, provide an official notice and information on any customer-approved alternative.” Track the human-safety follow-up separately from each transaction’s delivery status.
