Operational problem

Exporters buying corrugated boxes in Europe need to know which plant will make their next order if production moves. DS Smith’s November 3 investor release says packaging volumes are being consolidated into fewer, better-performing sites and that closure has been announced for about 15% of its packaging sites. Packaging Dive reported 29 packaging site closures announced or in progress on November 4. This does not mean all 29 are already closed. Management expects to largely maintain volume, but that is not a customer-specific guarantee about lead times or transport routes.

Evidence to request

The future DS Smith business is the planned separation of International Paper’s EMEA packaging operations. The investor release describes a network of 14 paper mills and approximately 180 packaging sites. Packaging Dive says roughly 13% of the volume brought to market is being shifted between production sites. Separation remains conditional, and investor cost-saving targets do not prove continuity for any individual customer. Korean exporters should confirm the current and receiving plants by destination country, board and box specification approvals, printing-plate and die transfers, test reports, and backup capacity.

Practical deliverable

Create a supplier change register listing the current plant, proposed receiving plant, changeover date, approval requirements, buffer inventory, lead-time owner, and alternate source. Compare pilot and first commercial batches after a move even when the nominal specification is unchanged. This is an editorial sourcing tool, not a DS Smith customer-specific timetable.

Hold conditions

Without a confirmed plant-by-plant closure list and customer transfer schedule, do not forecast delays or a Europe-wide box shortage. Unlike earlier coverage of International Paper’s separation plan, this update focuses on the newly disclosed footprint and volume moves.
