When a packaging supplier raises prices to cover inflation, the timing of the cost and the timing of a customer’s new quote rarely coincide. Smurfit Westrock’s third-quarter 2026 release illustrates that lag. The images below are conceptual, not photographs of its sites or customer contracts.
Field problem
The company’s results release reports third-quarter net sales of $8.161 billion, net income of $219 million, and adjusted EBITDA of $1.205 billion. It expects approximately $700 million of additional freight and energy costs for full-year 2026. That figure is neither a third-quarter-only charge nor an amount already recovered from every customer.
The company says it has implemented pricing initiatives across paper grades, while EMEA and APAC containerboard price increases are passing through with the normal time lag. Management expects more of the benefit from pricing actions in 2027. That remains a forecast, not booked performance.

Evidence to check
Packaging Dive’s October 28 earnings analysis discusses the cost pressure and timing of increases. But there is no basis for converting the group’s $700 million outlook into a per-ton increase for a specific Korean import contract. Grade, geography, renewal date and freight terms vary.
Unlike our earlier North American containerboard price-announcement guide, this article focuses on the newly reported quarterly cost burden and realization lag.

Practical deliverable
Keep separate columns for (1) grade and region, (2) announcement date, (3) contract effective date, (4) freight inclusion, (5) actual invoice price, and (6) next renegotiation. This is an editorial method for checking when an announced increase reached the purchased paper or box price.
When to hold application
Without contract terms and invoices, do not translate a group-wide cost forecast directly into a Korean board-price forecast. Treat the expected 2027 recovery as an outlook until future results establish it.
